Midgard sold

A picture that I painted for last year's Illuxcon has just sold to an American buyer who chose it from my website.
The proportion of sales this year off the net compared to through galleries is over 80% to 20%. Are the days of dominance by galleries over, is it now the time that artists don't need them any more? I don't seem to although I would like to place my Roadside America series in one somehow, someday.......
"Midgard" is oil on canvas 39 1/2" x 16".

  1. Does the fact that you have a presence in galleries help online sales?

  2. I have no idea! I suppose it just might be useful to have at least been exhibited in galleries for your CV for credibility but I don't know if that has been a factor in my selling paintings.

  3. Galleries are so much more expensive it seems. There are dealers/reps like Jane who are reasonable and worth working through, but I see all the gallery shows being advertised online and the art there seems way more expensive than the same art from the artist direct (whether through social media, website, Illuxcon, etc)

  4. One obvious problem with galleries is the 50% commission. Unless the painting is on their walls it is languishing in their storeroom unseen, Sometimes it it will be on their website but then that is the the same viewing platform that I am using to advertise...I reckon if they make a sale that way they should charge less commission!

  5. Aren't we always encouraged to charge the same for a painting wherever we sell it? Leads to confusion and worse otherwise!

  6. I am talking about the commission charged by the gallery to the artist - the price of the artwork remains the same to the buyer.
